Putting Politicians on Notice
The School Climate Strikes are young people around the world who are marching to protest environmental degradation and, hopefully, influence legislators. I think these students – are inspiring and wonderful. They want governments to stop global warming by switching to renewable energy. However, the reaction they are getting from those in power seems predictable. Comments range from condescending, “ … they are really too young to understand the economic complexity of making changes,” to condemnation, “…they are increasing teachers’ workload.’
I love the signs these young people are carrying. Some of my favorites are:
- There is no Planet B
- The sea is rising and so are we
- Denial is not policy
- System change, not climate change
- If you don’t act like adults, we will
But the sign I would like to see each young protestor wear or carry is one that says, “I will be a voter in 2 years…4 years… 6 years. And I will vote you out of office! Also, it would be great if the students worked to register currently voter-aged people to vote against the inept and ineffective legislators. That would get their attention. Because the change that most politicians fear the most is losing their jobs!
